Know what’s below. Protect yourself, your property, and your community before you start any digging project.
“Click Before You Dig” is a free online service that helps connect you with utility providers across Nova Scotia before you start any digging project.
When you submit a request, participating utility companies are notified and will:
- Locate underground infrastructure near your work area
- Mark approximate line locations using paint or flags
- Share important guidance to help you dig safely
This coordinated process ensures that key utilities are aware of your plans, helping reduce the risk of damage before excavation begins.
Everyone.
You must request a locate if you are:
- A homeowner planning a project (deck, fence, landscaping, etc.)
- A contractor or excavator
- Installing posts, trees, pools, or foundations
- Digging with power tools or heavy equipment
Even small projects can pose risks—many utility lines are buried just below the surface.
If you damage—or even suspect damage to—a utility line:
- Stop work immediately
- Move to a safe distance
- Call the appropriate emergency or utility contact. We offer a 24/7 emergency line 1-866-313-3030.
- Do not attempt to repair it yourself
Even minor damage can create serious safety risks.
