New Construction MURB Heating Incentives

The New MURB Incentive program will apply to eligible new construction MURBs* (including
apartments, condominiums, hotels and long term care facilities) that purchase and install natural
gas-based primary in-unit space heating systems and/or natural gas-based in-unit DHW systems.
This program ends on December 31, 2026.

This program and related programs are subject to an aggregate annual cap of $1,300,000 of rebates provided. Once this cap is reached in a calendar year, the program is closed for that year. Rebate applications will be processed in the order received. Eastward Energy reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, suspend or cancel the program at any time and from time to time, in its sole discretion.

*A Multi-unit Residential Building refers to five or more separate dwelling units that are contained
within one building.

Incentive Structure:

  1. Eligible MURBs who purchase and install a primary space heating system that uses natural
    gas for part or all of the building’s space heating will receive a one-time incentive of
    $20.00/GJ multiplied by the building’s projected annual natural gas usage for space heating and
    DHW as determined by a completed building energy model. For example, an eligible MURB that
    is projected to use 3,000 GJ of natural gas annually would receive an incentive of $20.00/GJ X
    3,000 GJ = $60,000.
  2. Eligible MURBs that purchase and install a primary space heating system that does not use
    natural gas and install a natural gas-based DHW system will receive a one-time incentive of
    $10.00/GJ X the building’s estimated annual natural gas usage.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the New MURB Incentive, the MURB must:

  • Be a new construction MURB;
  • Be at the design phase or early implementation phase of development;
  • Currently have access to Eastward Energy’s natural gas delivery system, or Eastward Energy has
    determined that it is economically feasible to construct a natural gas main and service line to
    provide the MURB with natural gas service, as determined by the feasibility test thresholds that
    have been approved by the Nova Scotia Utility & Review Board;
  • Complete and share with Eastward Energy, an energy model meeting the minimum
    requirements specified by Eastward Energy from time to time, that includes the evaluation of
    one or more natural gas-based systems for primary heating and a projection of the building’s
    annual natural gas usage for space heating and DHW. The energy model must be completed by a
    certified energy modeler using CAN-QUEST/e-QUEST, IES, HEP, or EnergyPlus modeling
    software; and
  • Purchase and install natural gas-based primary in-unit space heating systems and/or natural
    gas-based in-unit DHW systems, and commence delivery of natural gas by Eastward Energy,
    after January 1, 2024 and by December 31st of the second year following approval of the
    incentive application. (i.e. Applications accepted in 2024 must have eligible equipment installed
    and commence delivery of natural gas by December 31, 2026).

Eastward Energy retains the sole discretionary right to approve or not approve each application for
the program and to determine if an applicant meets the applicable eligibility criteria, and such
decisions shall be final and conclusive.
