New Legislation Paves the Way for Hydrogen and Renewable Natural Gas

Legislation Supporting Lower-Carbon Energy Integration

On September 20, the Advancing Nova Scotia Opportunities Act was passed by the provincial government.  The Act supports efforts by Eastward Energy Inc. to integrate renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen into its distribution system.  This new legislation will allow the Company to apply to the NSUARB to build a domestic hydrogen production facility or purchase hydrogen and RNG.

Hydrogen Blending Approval

Another significant milestone was achieved in August, when the Technical Safety Division of the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration verified the regulatory compliance of blending up to 5% hydrogen into Eastward’s natural gas system.[1]

Dalhousie University, in partnership with Eastward Energy, has launched the Dalhousie Hydrogen Applications Research Lab, where research is underway to test the limits of blending hydrogen into the natural gas system and the use of hydrogen-enriched natural gas in household appliances. In addition to blending hydrogen into its system, Eastward is working to identify RNG projects within Nova Scotia, from local farms to landfills and wastewater treatment plants, to expand our renewable energy opportunities.

Looking Ahead to 2030

In addition to hydrogen and RNG, Eastward Energy is actively investigating the use of technologies that will improve energy efficiency and lower emissions such as natural gas heat pumps and hybrid heating systems. Together, these advancements will lead to a more resilient energy future for Nova Scotia.
